Charcoal Painting

• Shaving the Charcoal

So, before I teach you how to render using Charcoal, let me show you how to shave the Charcoal using a cutter.

Shave your Charcoal using a one-way direction of strokes, and make sure to place it over your container or cup to accumulate the dust or powder to use.

So, now we have Charcoal dust and we’re ready to begin. Let’s copy the outline of the sphere from our previous exercise or make a new sphere for this exercise.

• Rendering Using Charcoal

Charcoal is similar to pencils, but there is a difference in terms of shading, since you’re going to use a brush to fill the values (more area coverage) instead of a pencil, which you have to make a lot of strokes to fill a specific area.

Charcoal has darker values compared to Pencil, even with various ranges of tones. Also, Charcoal has a matte texture unlike Pencil which is Glossy in texture.
